Creative Learning and Social Justice: 10 propositions for minding the gap
Covid-19 exposes radical discontinuity separating formal education from young people’s lives.
It has thrown into sharp relief fundamental questions including the very place of learning
or the structure and purpose of assessment, exposing deep social division.
If government ministers appear powerless to understand, let alone resolve such questions,
what’s our proposition?

Between art and technology:
digital natives in transition education
The presentation critically discusses a documented experience of teaching conceptual, audio-visual and technical skills in interactive art and design to secondary school children of age 11 to 15 regularly following a so-called ‘Art Plan’ programme at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague, The Netherlands in the past two years.
Based on the analysis of the collected material preliminary guidelines for school leaders and teachers across Europe will be shared on the successful implementation of contemporary interactive art education on a secondary school level, with a special attention to the creative use of smartphones in offline and online classes, inspired by the recent developments in distance learning.

Design Thinking method, a tool for innovation.
My interest in the design thinking technique began to deepen further when students indicated during project evaluation that it was when they used this method that they arrived at new insights. In the context of the KABK Research Group I conducted a research project of design thinking practice.
The purpose was twofold: to experience personally what significance DT could have as a research instrument outside design practice and to define how DT could unlock a new approach to education in the arts. In what ways might students use the design thinking method to formulate their thesis questions, to set their project objectives and to innovate educational approaches? The introduction will be followed by an active work session.
In smaller groups we’ll explore a number of propositions. During the session we apply the principles of the method to experience how in 4 steps a creative process can be initiated that can produce surprisingly useful results.

Bridging the Mind-Body Gap
The mind needs the body to learn and also to interact and communicate. Modern work environments are characterised by lifelong learning as well as by coworking and collaboration. Connecting Embodied learning in educational practice is one approach to bridge the gap between training and employment.
In my workshop you will try out examples of embodied learning as an alternative training tool to mentalistic education. So you will understand, sense and feel why at school the mind needs the body.

The school that builds the school
What would an educational program integrated into an architectural scheme of works look like? How can we involve the community in the building of the community? Specifically considering England, how can we help more state school students in higher education courses such as design and architecture?
This talk will outline the proposal for a 3 year design and architecture program for state school students to design and build a community building. 30 min
Collaborative workshop: What makes a creative education? 30min

Born in Montreal, Kevin Green graduated from MA Sculpture at the Royal College of Art having previously studied at the Bartlett School of Architecture. Green is the Co-founder of STORE.
STORE drives social change by enabling public access to art and design. We are an association of artists, architects and designers working from locations across London. STORE comprises three core elements: an educational programme, socially engaged practice, and diverse public events.
STORE exists to facilitate the sharing of design skills and knowledge between experienced practitioners, aspiring students and the general public. As a Community Interest Company STORE’s associates apply their knowledge and skills to projects that directly address current socio-economic challenges.
